For two decades, Marty Blumen has operated at the intersection of technical precision and wild spaces. An Emmy award-winning artist and acclaimed outdoors photographer, his career is a study in light, whether it is being simulated for a Hollywood blockbuster or captured at sunrise on a remote alpine face.
Marty’s journey has been defined by a deep immersion in the craft of visual storytelling. From the storied halls of the Jim Henson Creature Shop in London to the cutting-edge pipelines of Framestore and Animal Logic, he has refined the art of the invisible. His credits span the cinematic spectrum, including the vibrant cosmic vistas of Thor: Love and Thunder and the sprawling multiverses of Spider-Man: No Way Home. Notably, his work on Jimmy Chin’s Meru highlights a unique ability to blend high-end visual effects with the raw, documentary reality of elite climbing.
He was a pioneer in the industry as the founder of RemoteVFX, an original remote-first facility established in the rugged South Island of New Zealand well before decentralized workflows became the global standard. Today, he continues this legacy of excellence at the Crafty Apes Sydney office, bringing a veteran's eye to a new era of digital artistry.
Beyond the screen, Marty’s lens is trained on the rugged and the real. As a Grand Prize winner of the Banff Mountain Photography Competition, his imagery has graced the pages of National Geographic, Outside, and New Zealand Geographic. His philosophy of participatory photography is backed by a deep fascination with human-powered performance, and he holds certifications in anatomy and movement science that inform his approach to documenting high-stakes athleticism in the mountains.
Marty’s methodology is rooted in human-centered design. After beginning his career in nuclear medicine multimedia, he brought his experience full circle by earning a Postgraduate Diploma in Interaction Design from the University of Sydney, graduating on the Dean’s List. He remains an active member of the Visual Effects Society (VES) and the Australian Cinematographers Society (ACS), believing that the most compelling stories are found where cutting-edge technology meets the unpredictable beauty of the natural world.
